I edit photos using Photos app, Affinity Photos, Pixelmator Pro, Photoshop Express, and a couple other apps, I edit movies in iMovies. I am not a gamer and I usually have less than 4 tabs open on my browser at any give time. It seems about on par with Mojave on my iMac (only a lot faster). I have not noticed any excessive read/write activity. Internal SSD: the thing is blazingly fast.I have had zero hangups, "Kernel Panics" or other unwanted shutdowns. In fact, it seems a little more stable than my iMac was running Mojave. Stability: This has not been an issue.Topaz apps, if you use them, need to be physically deleted and reinstalled on the new machine (at least when I did mine, they have issued new versions over the past week that may do away with that issue).

If 720P isn't what you need, then maybe wait until the next versions come out in 6 months or so (or get a stand alone webcam could be another option). As long as I can make out who is on the other side, I don't really care much about resolution. I have very low expectations for webcams. I have had several Zoom meetings and nobody has complained about seeing my ugly mug in lower resolution. However, I have had opportunity to use it outside my desk a few times and it worked well. I almost always use it as a desktop hooked to external monitor with external keyboard and mouse. Keyboard: Laptop keyboard has a good feel.Bluetooth external Keyboard and Mouse have worked as expected. BlueTooth: (see AirDrop exception below).Much better than the old pre-Retina iMac display I've been using. Laptop Monitor: this thing is gorgeous.I have not tried it via HDMI or DisplayPort. External Monitor: I have had zero problems with the monitor connected via USB-c.I use the SD Card Reader in the hub when importing photos.I also connect another SSD to the hub when I run a secondary backup of my important documents and the libraries on the SanDisk.I have my photos library and videos library on the external SSD. I have a Sandisk Extreme 1tb external SSD connected all the time to the CalDigit. Dell 2720Q Monitor connected via USB-c (has internal USB Hub to which I have my 4tb WD MyBook connected running Time Machine backups.

Again, Steve, if this is too far outside the realm of this forum, please feel free to remove. Again, I'm looking for high quality that will last more than the least expensive although I don't want to spend money needlessly either. Recommendations on a high quality dock: I listed use above. Not a big demand on monitor other than the photo stuff. I will use it for a combination of still photo editing and some limited video editing along with normal computer stuff like word processing, presentation graphics (Keynote / Powerpoint), some spreadsheets, etc. It's 1300 and that seems to be the same price at Amazon and Best Buy too. I see an LG (Ultrafine 27MD5KL-B.AUSA) listed on Apple's site. Recommendations on monitor that meets my needs. I will be running 1 external SSD with my photos library, 1 running as a Time Machine backup, 1 SD Card reader, 1 XQD card reader (maybe a combo reader). I think a powered dock would be preferable. I don't mind spending some money since I tend to keep computer equipment a long time. 32" and larger would require rearranging stuff on my desk. 27" class would be preferable to larger due to how my home office is configured.

I will be using it on my desk 90+% of the time and only as a portable when I'm traveling (hopefully post COVID we will be able to do that again).Įxternal monitor USB-C preferably. I had laptops through many years of my career and when I retired, they kind of reminded me of work thus the desktop. I have had an iMac for the past almost 7 years but think the flexibility of a laptop would be once again welcome. Drive works well and reasonably fast but the computer itself has seen better days time to update. While it works I have an external SSD kluged to it. I'm not sure how much latitude you want in this forum.įellow nature photographers, the array of options is baffling me and I was hoping you all could offer some recommendations and options.Īs background: my current iMac (late 2013) is on its last legs. Steve, if this is too far off base, please let me know so I can delete or please delete at your end.
